New IC short story - The Dark Road

There's a new Obernewtyn-related short story coming out in an anthology of short stories due for release on the 1st of June this year! It's set between the great white and Elspeth's time, and it's called "The Dark Road".

The book is called Legends of Australian Fantasy. http://www.harpercollins.com.au/books/9 ... index.aspx

Yes, it is an anthology, thanks for pointing that out - I just edited my post to make it clearer. [:)] And I'm really looking forward to it - can't wait for this story, and there's a few other authors I like in there, including a Sevenwaters story by Juliet Marillier!

Apparently Juliet Marillier is a really good author. I see there are a lot of people who read her books. [mrgreen]

Juliet Marillier has a lot of fans who are COers - in fact it's because of CO that I started reading her books, because some of my friends here recommended the Sevenwaters trilogy. [mrgreen]

Here's its entry in the booklist: http://carmody-online.com/node/53

Thanks for that detail Zanth. I think Min has more info about it on Obernet.

The book is officially starting to be available in stores! It has arrived in Angus & Robertson stores and also Dymocks, and is most likely also available in other chains, and quite probably elsewhere! *dances*

What Isobelle says about the story at the end of the Afterword: "So here is the story of a character who is almost completely invisible in the Obernewtyn Chronicles, unless you know where to look for her. Her story reveals a secret that readers of the Obernewtyn series cannot otherwise discover."

So, everyone - get out there, read it, and then come back so we can start theorising! [mrgreen]

Do you reckon the book would be available in Big W. *Sorry* But I'm a cheap book shopper. If it has arrived in A&R and Dymocks it probably has also arrived in QBD and Borders. Borders website have got the book listed for $37.95. Is it just me or just that seem really expensive. If that's the normal price I don't think I'll bother about buying the book I'll just borrow it from my local libray. [mrgreen]

I doubt it's a big enough release to be in Big W. I got my copy at A&R for $34.95 (if they're out of copies it's possible to ask in-store and they'll order it in for you). (Also, it shouldn't cost more than 34.95, Borders are just dodgy. I agree it's a bit pricey, but it is a large format anthology, so they tend to go for around that, or at least 30.) But I guess you could just ask your library to get it?

I'm waiting for it to go down in price, simply because I haven't yet read any of the other series' that the other stories belong to. I did dodgily read The Dark Road in the shop though *looks shifty* and enjoyed the solid dose of the Ober world...but was disappointed with the ending. If you could call that an ending - it felt like it wasn't finished, there was still more to the story.

I agree about the ending - all that build-up and then it kind of went nowhere - I guess because it was building up the anticipation about the destination. But the journey itself was very interesting (meaning the rest of the story). [mrgreen] (Probably didn't need spoiler tags, but just in case...)

I know what you mean about the price, but I figure I'm going to get my money's worth from that story alone, and I also love the worlds of Juliet Marillier and Garth Nix. (Plus there's a bunch of authors in there I've been meaning to read (including Jennifer Fallon) so I figure I'll read the stories and see how I go - hopefully I'll understand enough to follow them. I'm sure people aren't expected to be familiar with ALL the authors included.)

BTW, the book doesn't seem to be available in all stores (they just aren't getting it in) but copies can be ordered online, and most stores will order it in for you if you ask them to.

Thank-you for the info, and nice to see you too!

I am very excited about Garth Nix and Juliet Marillier's stories as well! (loves the Old Kingdom)

I will scour my local bookatoriums for this anthology. *heroic emoticon*

What kind of characters is she using for 'The Dark Road?' - if that isn't too big of a spoiler?

It sounds like the city centre stores are most likely to have it - A&R, Dymocks, Readings, Collins...

It's about Hannah Seraphim, so that should give you some idea of the characters included. [:)]

Also, I like bookatoriums and think I shall adopt it. *nods* [mrgreen]
